Solid Wall Insulation

If your home was constructed before the 1920s, your external walls will likely be ‘solid’ walls, rather than cavity walls that are present in more modern homes. Insulating solid walls is a different process and can be more expensive – but it also leads to higher savings than cavity wall insulation.

The solid wall insulation that reduces heat loss within the home is commonly known as ‘dry lining’ and works by installing insulating material to the walls, followed by a vapour barrier which provides protection against air penetration. Almost all property types are suitable for dry lining and thanks to the whole process able to be done quickly, it is straightforward and hassle-free.

Cavity wall Insulation

Cavity wall insulation is an even quicker, hassle-free way of insulating the home – for buildings that have cavity walls, they are an excellent way to save money and generate free energy. Insulation of cavity walls can dramatically improve your home’s heat retention – almost HALF of a property’s heat can escape through cavity walls, so you can imagine what a significant saving you’ll make if you’re able to retain most of that.

Cavity walls are two walls with a gap in between – the outer wall is often made from brick, while the inner wall may be brick or concrete. Cavity walls were developed to prevent homes becoming damp; stopping moisture from entering the inside of a building – despite this protection, heat still escapes from cavity walls and therefore must be addressed.

Insulation for cavity walls works by filling the space with a material that reduces the heat loss by stopping the air moving around inside the gap. This helps to retain heat and therefore requiring a homeowner to use less of it to keep warm.

Loft Insulation

Heat, of course, rises – and around a quarter of heat loss happens because it rises through the ceilings and the roof because the loft hasn’t been insulated. This makes insulating the roof space one of the most cost-effective solutions you can take to start saving money on your energy bills.

General loft insulation is a quick and simple process – involving a blanket of insulation material that’s laid down to create a barrier between the main portion of the property and loft (essentially trapping the heat).

However, if you’re considering a loft conversion, it’s important to consider the different type of insulation that is required. When converted into a room, a roof space requires a different type of insulation that will fit in the gaps between the joists and behind the new walls that comprise the new room. Without this insulation, the loft will experience vast temperature changes in summer and winter and in addition, the rest of the house will suffer from heat loss too, further increasing energy bills.

Applying For The ECO Grant Scheme

Applying for a grant is a simple process – you will be asked a few questions to see if your property meets the scheme eligibility criteria. Grants are to help with the cost of insulation and you will usually get an immediate indication regarding your eligibility.

You are likely to be eligible for an ECO4 grant if you are a core group customer from scheme year 12 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme, or you receive at least one of the following benefits and satisfy relevant income requirements (where applicable):

Income related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
