What Is ECO4?
First introduced in 2013, the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a UK Government energy efficiency scheme that is designed to reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty.
Over the last decade, the scheme has been amended a number of times – the recent ‘ECO3’ scheme was closed on the 31st March 2022 and was replaced by ECO4 on the 27th July. Covering a 4-year period until 31st March 2026, the main objective of ECO4 is to provide funding to improve the least energy efficient housing stock occupied by low income and vulnerable households. This may include new boilers, loft insulation, wall insulation and high retention electric storage heaters for eligible householders.

Am I Eligible For Energy Efficient Grants?
You can get ECO funding by applying online with a registered installer. Applying for a grant is a simple process – you will be asked a few questions to see if your property meets the scheme eligibility criteria. Grants are to help with the cost of insulation, heating and energy efficiency measures – you will usually get an immediate indication regarding your eligibility.
You are likely to be eligible for an ECO4 grant if you are a core group customer from scheme year 12 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme, or you receive at least one of the following benefits and satisfy relevant income requirements (where applicable):

- Income based Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support (IS)
- Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Universal Credit (UC)

Your likely to be eligible to free or highly subsidised home improvements if you live in private housing and get one of the following benefits:

If you rent you must have the owner’s permission to do the work.
Alternatively, if you are living in social housing with an energy performance certificate (EPC) rating of E, F or G you might also be eligible for the scheme. Social housing with an EPC rating of D can also qualify for an innovation measure. Further information on innovation can be found in our Innovation Guidance which will be published in due course.
Local authorities are also able to refer residents in their areas to obligated energy suppliers so that they can be offered support under the scheme.
